How do I add a custom reference type in EndNote 2025?

Answer

  1. Select ‘Edit’, then ‘Preferences’.
  2. Select 'Reference Types’.
  3. Select 'Modify Reference Types’.
  4. Use the drop-down to select one of the 'unused' reference types. If they are all in use, choose any reference type that you are willing to overwrite. 
  5. Type a name for the new reference type into the column heading.
  6. Fill out all of the necessary fields.
  7. Click ‘Okay' to save your changes.

You can now select the new reference type when entering references. If you overwrite a reference type, any references using the old type will change to the new one.
