Does the library have any old newspapers?
Answer
We have a collection of microfilm images of old newspapers. Most are local papers but some are from further away. The oldest date back to 1831, and others are as recent as 2001. These can be found by the Local History collection on level 2. You can view the newspapers using the microfilm reader in the Local History collection.
If you need any help finding the microfilms or using the reader, please ask a member of staff.
We have some editions of the following papers in our microfilm collection:
Birmingham Daily Gazette
Birmingham Dispatch
Birmingham Journal
Birmingham Mail
Birmingham Post
Birmingham Weekly Post
League, London
British Gazette, London
Northern Star, Leeds
Northern Star, London
Liberal Unionist, London
Poor Man’s Guardian, London
Women’s/Worker’s Dreadnought
The collection also contains some information from the 1871 Birmingham census, and some editions of the Time’s Educational Supplement.
