How do I reference images in a PowerPoint presentation?

Answer

Referencing images depends on how you are using the image.

If it is just for decorative purposes, then, strictly, a reference is not required, but you will need to check that you have permission to use it and, if you do, you will usually need to acknowledge the source according to the rights owners’ wishes. Clip art and public domain (sometimes called CC-0, which means no copyright claimed) images do not need acknowledgement.

If you’re reproducing a table or a diagram etc. then, essentially, you are quoting from the source and should cite in the same way as you would for a regular quotation – that is, with a standard in-text citation. The only additional information you may need for the citation is the name of the diagram, e.g.:

                (Phipps, 2016, p.177, fig.3)

                (Wells and Akbar, 2020, p.21, table 2)

The reference list entry is unaffected – you will reference it as the source it is taken from in the normal way.
