How do I reference AI?

Answer

Birmingham Newman Library does not recommend using and citing information generated by AI systems in your work, unless you have expressly agreed with your tutors that it is ok to do so.

AI systems are not academic sources of reliable information, and can produce inaccurate, false, or plagiarised information. Unless you have agreed with your tutor that you can include information produced by AI, then the only time you should reference it is if you are using an example of the kind of output that AI produces. This means that you are not using it as a source of information, but simply demonstrating the kind of answers that it gives, if this is relevant to your work.

If you do need to reference a conversation with AI, Birmingham Newman University Library’s Referencing Guide has guidance on how to correctly cite answers that it gives and provide a full and transparent reference list entry.
