How do I reference sources from the GOV.uk website?

Answer

Webpages and documents on the GOV.uk website can mostly be referenced in the same way you reference any webpage or online document.

However, for the author part of your in-text citation or reference list, you should not use "GOV.uk". Instead, follow this guidance:

  1. Always use named authors, if they are given, as a preference.
  2. If there are no named authors, use the department or government agency name (e.g. Department for Education or Office for National Statistics or UK Atomic Energy Authority).
Sometimes you can get this from a logo at the top of the webpage. Otherwise it may be listed on the front cover of the document or under the title of the webpage.
  3. If none of the above apply, use UK Government as the author.
