How do I add in-text citations using the Zotero Word add-on?

Answer

Make sure the source you are referencing has already been added to your Zotero library and that you have the Zotero word add-on enabled.

When you want to add an in-text reference, click the Zotero tab in Word and click ‘Add/Edit Citation’. The first time you do this, you will be prompted to choose your referencing style. In most undergraduate degree cases, this will be Cite them right 12th edition Harvard (no "et al.") referencing. Please read 'How do I set my referencing style on Zotero?' FAQ if this style is not shown.

Click ‘OK’ and this will bring up a red Zotero search bar within the document. Type in the author or title of the source you are referencing and click the relevant source. The source will now be highlighted in blue within the red search bar. Click on the source to open a small menu to add your page number (if relevant). Press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard to add the in-text citation.

You should always ‘unlink citations’ before you submit an assignment with Zotero generated references. This ensures that any edits you have made to references in the Word document are preserved.
